Why did you decide to join the Air Force?

My aviation journey started with the Singapore Youth Flying Club (SYFC) during my school days. My interest in the subject deepened as I learnt more about flight operations. I also came to appreciate the bonds and camaraderie built during my Basic Military Training (BMT). The experience cemented my decision to pursue a career in a military setting. I haven't looked back since, especially since my interest in aviation is aligned to a work environment that I like.

Tell us more about your current roles and responsibilities.

As an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) pilot, my key responsibility is to operate and ensure the UAVs' safe flight. We are the eyes in the skies and conduct surveillance on ground activities and detect potential threats to analyse vital intelligence in support of the Singapore Armed Forces' (SAF's) mission. Apart from honing our core job competencies, the RSAF develops us holistically through the diverse roles and opportunities available in the organisation. As a junior officer, I am grateful for the exposure to the UAV community's development and operations. This further spurs my interest and increases my confidence in the organisation as I know that we are constantly striving to develop our people and technology, and maintain high standards as a first-class Air Force.

How has the Air Force helped you develop professionally and personally?

The RSAF has taught me to rise to every challenge positively and fearlessly. I have the confidence to take on responsibilities as the RSAF always ensure that we are adequately trained to take on the roles given to us. I'm grateful to have a good team and mentors who always offer advice and support to encourage me to overcome the challenges I face, and this has in turn made me a better manager over the years. As someone who sees things with a macro-view, I have learnt to pay attention to the finer details as all these small things may add up over time and have a broader implication on our operations. I am now able to approach projects and issues more holistically while being meticulous at the same time.

What qualities do you think are important to excel in a career with the RSAF?

The two qualities I think one should have are perseverance and dedication in the pursuit of excellence. The future is never certain. We need to persevere through adversity, rise to the challenges that come our way, and grow from these experiences. As the defenders of our skies, we need to be the best version of ourselves and demand the highest standards to protect the livelihood of our friends, families, and that of all Singaporeans.
